Since the successful completion of our pilot in November 2021, our Mathare site at Mathare Community Outreach (MCO) school is in full operation 6 days a week.
Everyday, our youth employees collect approximately 100kg of waste from the community and landfill to fuel our business. We power the Community Cooker using the non-recyclable waste, and use the heat energy to bake bread, boil water and make Uji Power. Uji Power is an energy-dense, highly nutritious porridge that helps combat malnutrition. Our employees sell our bread and Ujji Power both on the street and in our new Taka Taka Zero Kiosk in the centre of Mathare 4B town. The income of their sales cover their salaries.
Our Community Cooker at MCO was built in 2012 by Safaricom Foundation but quickly fell into disrepair due to a lack of business model and accountability. In 2021, we repaired the existing cooker and now operate it in line with our business model. We bake bread and make Uji Power on a daily basis using the cooker.
In March 2024, we celebrated the opening of our own Taka Taka Zero kiosk right in the heart of Mathare 4B community. Our shop allows us to sell more quantity, spread our branding and access a larger customer base. All products made at MCO on the Community Cooker is sold at the kiosk.
